Across the state of Georgia, Financial Aid Offices were being asked to
conduct workshops on how to complete the FAFSA, spending numerous nights
and weekends going from high school to high school. College Goal Sunday reduced the
individual work and developed a Georgia team. This team would increase the
number of FAFSA completed by those who need it, increase accuracy, and
reduce the amount of corrections that typically have to be made - all on
one Sunday.
Georgia held its first College Goal Sunday program in 2007. During the first year, financial aid professionals were the most active members in the task force. With the 2008 year, we added a high school site, and for 2009, our focus has shifted more to high schools and community-based organizations for support of the College Goal Sunday program. The Georgia program is pursuing a partnership with VITA; we would like to pilot College Goal Sunday programs with free VITA tax assistance available prior to the College Goal Sunday event.
